Steltman Chair is defined as "furniture as sculpture" designed by a Dutch architect, Gerrit Rietvield. It's a well-balanced composition due to the identical wooden planks which were put together vertically and horizontally. It may seem like a sculpture that depends on new tecnologies but in fact quite the opposite, no tecnology was used in any way. Gerrit Rietvield adhered his work into three principles: independent planar and linear elements, primary colors; and asymmetrical compositions. The asymmetrical chair, which produces a surprising image from every angle, is completely made up of lines and surfaces. The seat square and the chair only has 3 legs, the rear one providing the necessary stability with a right angle. The two opposing shapes of the chairs form a unity and thus also gain a symbolic meaning.
